Before our wedding, we went on an excursion with our guests and photographer, Maggie Winters, around the D.C. metro and mall.  These are some of our favorite pictures from our wedding, and we’re so glad that we took the time before our wedding to spend with each other and our guests, capturing the immense love that was exploding from us before we said, “I do.”

The weather in D.C. was beautiful that day, and after walking around and riding the metro for an hour, we headed back to the Swann House to take off our shoes, look each other in the eyes one final time as an unmarried couple, then walk into the living room of the bed and breakfast that was filled with our friends, and publicly announce our love and intent to each other.

It was such a beautiful day, one that we’re both remembering so fondly right now.  We’re curled up in bed together, looking through all our old pictures, amazed by our life together.

On our first anniversary, we took a trip back to D.C., and we caught up with Maggie again.

We put together a 1940s inspired shoot, and it was such a fantastic way to spend our anniversary.

I’m beyond grateful for my wonderful wife and for the pictures we have of us together.  As a photographer, pictures are important to me.  But beyond that, looking through all our pictures from our lives thus far together, we remember so many more details, experience so many more emotions and memories.  The pictures take us back to those days, recalling events that we’d both forgotten.  I’m feeling grateful for the life I’ve received, for the love I’ve fought for, for the fire in our hearts.

I love her dearly.  Thank you to everyone who’s been around for this crazy, wonderful ride of ours.  Your support has driven and sustained us.

Two years down, forever to go.  <3

Rob and Nicole had a small ceremony in Pioneer Park in Cincinnati.  I absolutely love Pioneer Park, and I’ve done a children’s session there before (with Ethan and Elaine).  It’s a gorgeous location, even more so in the Fall.  Rob and Nicole wanted to do a family session before their wedding to celebrate the blending of their families, and to capture everyone all gussied up.  We spent about an hour before the ceremony wandering all over the park taking pictures.  At one point, the kids saw a soccer goal, so we had to go get a picture there.  After pictures, there was a small ceremony in the gazebo at the park with family and friends, and then they were off to celebrate!

We really couldn’t have asked for better weather.  We were scared of rain and mud, but the ground was pretty dry that day, and the rain held off until right as their ceremony was finishing.  The leaves also stayed on the trees a bit longer this Fall, so they provided an incredible backdrop for the pictures.  I definitely recommend Autumn weddings!

Rob and Nicole had such a special wedding.  I loved seeing and photographing two families joining together, and I wish everyone in their family the absolute best.  Congratulations!

Liliya had a beautiful Calla Lily bouquet, and when we were taking pictures before the ceremony, a ladybug landed on her flowers.  I believe I shrieked from joy and snapped multiple pictures before it flew away.  Matt & Liliya had a wonderful, intimate, and laid back wedding.  Two of Matt’s sisters played the piano and violin during the processional, and a friend of theirs created their Ketubah (a Jewish marriage covenant).  There was an awesome chair dance, and so much love throughout the day.  It was such a wonderful wedding.

I’ve been a little behind on blogging recently (I’m getting more photography sessions up soon!), so while there’s some snow on the ground outside, enjoy looking at this lovely August wedding!

I’m so happy to have been a part of their wedding and to do their wedding photography.  There were so many cute, happy children, too!  I can’t help but take pictures of children when they’re around.

With this large of a group, one of the challenges is to make sure you’re getting pictures of the right people together and not leaving anyone out.  It’s helpful to ask for a list of names before the session so you can start remembering families and relationships.  On the client’s end, what to wear can also be a difficult question.  I thought Kris’s family did a great job of coordinating the clothes they were wearing.  Their color choices complement each other, without being identical.  This gives an overall seamless quality to the photographs, while still allowing each person to stand out.

Wendy and Ken have three boys: Jackson is 3 years old, and Logan and Noah are 2 years old.  For their session, Wendy told me she wanted some candid outdoor pictures of the whole family.  She wanted the pictures to catch moments of family interaction – playing and chasing the boys around, snuggling, and just being silly.  She also mentioned that Noah is crazy about superheroes, so Jacqueline and I surprised the boys with capes to wear at the session.

These pictures were important to the family for a few reasons, and I asked Wendy if I could share a bit of their story.  She said:

People always make comments about how busy we must be after they see us out with the boys, and yes we are busy, and yes it can be exhausting.  And our house is usually loud, messy and chaotic but also FUN.  It took my husband and I seven years, 3 invitros and lots of praying before these little guys came into our lives.  So we have learned to not sweat the small stuff like crayon on our walls or cereal spilled on the floor.  We can have nice things when they’re older.  Right now we just want to have fun and enjoy them.

I love their story, and I was so excited to meet this family.

Jackson, Logan, and Noah were a never stopping trio of energy!  From the minute we started to the very end, all three were running in opposite directions.  I had a blast chasing after them with the camera.

Wendy and Ken, you have a beautiful family.  I’m so happy I had the opportunity to work with you and to see your children at this age.

We met for our session during the evening, and the park wasn’t too crowded then.  We started at Sawyer Point and worked our way toward Yeatman’s Cove, stopping at a painted piano, before heading to the Serpentine Wall, and then finally the Purple People Bridge.  The light was gorgeous, and Kylie & Glenn were dressed in simple, but chic attire which suited the look they wanted for their pictures.

 I’m so in love with this engagement photography session.  The light, colors, and location are all wonderful.  There are so many textures downtown!  I’ve been wanting to shoot downtown, and this was a great opportunity to do so.  I think Kylie & Glenn had a great idea to go with a more classy approach to their pictures, but this session could also be done in more casual clothes and have a completely different look.

Kylie & Glenn, I wish you both the best!  I hope you have a wonderful wedding.

Zoe had just woken up from her morning nap, and she was such a happy baby that morning!  Sessions typically run about an hour, but with a small child, I always let them direct when they need a break, or when they are done for the day.  Zoe powered through an entire hour and didn’t start to get fussy until the very end.  We were able to get some adorable shots of Zoe by herself, as well as some wonderful family photography portraits.

At the end of the session, Zoe had a great time sitting on the rocks and playing in the water (don’t worry, Mom and Dad were within arms’ reach for these pictures).  She was wearing a cute aqua cloth diaper for the session, so there were minimal worries about her getting a soggy diaper from sitting on the damp rocks.  Katie and Craig came prepared with her favorite rattles if she needed some help looking at the camera, as well as an extra change of clothes.

I had such a great time at this session.  Katie and Craig were willing to get dirty, and even wet, to get some great pictures.  We all had a wonderful, relaxed time creating and capturing memories of Zoe at this age.

We were all so glad the storm passed so we could take pictures.  It ended up being the perfect evening, and the light at the park was gorgeous.  A picnic was the perfect set-up for rustic, casual engagement photography, and the fruit and wine bottle provided a fantastic backdrop to showcase Kylie’s engagement ring.

Also, look for Kylie & Glenn again in the coming weeks; to showcase their love of the city, we did an urban engagement session in downtown Cincinnati.  I’m looking forward to getting those pictures up on the blog as well!  Think “purple people bridge” and “fountain.”

Their casual clothes made a great, lighthearted shoot.  It was fun and flirty.  For their couple’s love photography session, there was a lot of tickling, laughing, and cuddling.  I didn’t do a lot of directing for this session, but rather, I focused on letting their personalities work together to make a great shoot.
